Dry-Type Transformer
Dry Type Transformers for Power Distribution Projects
Huamei Electric manufactures dry type transformers for industrial facilities, commercial buildings, infrastructure projects and electrical power distribution systems.
Our dry transformer range includes epoxy resin cast transformers, non-encapsulated dry type transformers and amorphous alloy dry type transformers for different installation environments and electrical system requirements.
Unlike oil immersed transformers, dry type transformers do not use insulating oil as the primary cooling and insulation medium. This makes them especially suitable for indoor installations and projects where fire safety, installation conditions, maintenance requirements and environmental considerations are important.
Typical applications include factories, commercial buildings, hospitals, data centers, airports, metro systems, railway facilities, industrial plants, indoor substations and other power distribution projects.
Available Dry Type Transformer Solutions
Huamei Electric provides several dry type transformer configurations according to different project requirements.
Typical product series include:
- SC(B)10 Epoxy Resin Cast Dry Type Transformer
- SC(B)11 Epoxy Resin Cast Dry Type Transformer
- SC(B)12 Dry Type Transformer
- SC(B)13 Epoxy Resin Cast Dry Type Transformer
- SG(B)13 Non-Encapsulated Dry Type Transformer
- SC(B)H15-M Amorphous Alloy Dry Type Transformer
Different transformer designs can be selected according to project capacity, voltage level, insulation system, cooling method, enclosure protection and installation environment.
For projects with special operating conditions, the transformer configuration should be reviewed together with the electrical specification and site conditions before production.
Key Selection Parameters
Selecting a dry type transformer requires more than confirming the rated capacity.
Important project information normally includes:
- Rated capacity (kVA)
- High-voltage rating
- Low-voltage rating
- Frequency
- Number of phases
- Vector group
- High-voltage tap range
- Short-circuit impedance
- Cooling method
- Insulation class
- Required enclosure protection
- Installation environment
- Ambient temperature
- Altitude
- Load characteristics
- Quantity
- Destination country
- Project application
For industrial projects involving motors, pumps, compressors or other equipment with high starting currents, actual load characteristics should also be reviewed before confirming transformer capacity.
Providing complete technical information during the quotation stage helps our engineering team prepare a more suitable transformer configuration.
Manufacturing and Quality Control
Dry type transformer manufacturing involves several controlled production processes.
Typical production stages include:
Technical drawings and test documents can be prepared according to the requirements of the project.
Epoxy Resin Cast Dry Type Transformers
Epoxy resin cast dry type transformers are one of the main dry transformer solutions used in indoor power distribution systems.
In this type of transformer, the high-voltage winding is typically encapsulated in epoxy resin through a controlled casting process, creating a solid insulation structure around the winding.
Huamei's SC(B) series dry type transformers use this type of design for applications requiring reliable insulation performance and mechanical strength.
The low-voltage winding can use foil winding structures, while the high-voltage winding is designed according to the required voltage and capacity.
The cast coil structure provides protection against moisture and environmental contamination and is suitable for indoor applications where fire protection and installation safety are important considerations.
Typical applications include high-rise buildings, commercial centers, hospitals, transportation infrastructure, industrial facilities and indoor substations.
Non-Encapsulated Dry Type Transformers
For projects requiring a different insulation structure, Huamei also provides SG(B) series non-encapsulated dry type transformers.
The SG(B)13 series uses a non-encapsulated winding structure manufactured with a vacuum pressure impregnation process.
This configuration is designed for applications where an open winding structure and effective heat dissipation are required.
Depending on project requirements, the enclosure, busbar interfaces and protection arrangement can be configured according to the installation environment.
Non-encapsulated dry type transformers can be considered for industrial power distribution projects where the electrical design, insulation system and operating environment are suitable for this transformer type.
Amorphous Alloy Dry Type Transformers
Huamei's dry transformer range also includes SC(B)H15-M amorphous alloy dry type transformers.
This type of transformer combines a dry type insulation system with an amorphous alloy core structure.
The amorphous alloy core is designed to reduce magnetic losses during no-load operation compared with conventional silicon-steel core configurations.
The transformer can use a three-phase wound core arrangement depending on the design requirements.
The high-voltage winding uses an insulated winding structure, while the low-voltage side can use foil winding.
Amorphous alloy dry type transformers can be considered for projects where reduced no-load losses are an important part of transformer selection.
Cooling Methods
Dry type transformers normally use air as the cooling medium.
Two common cooling arrangements are:
Natural air circulation removes heat generated during transformer operation without additional forced-air equipment.
This configuration is commonly used where the transformer operates continuously within its rated capacity and the installation environment provides sufficient ventilation.
Forced-air cooling uses cooling fans to increase airflow around the transformer.
An AF cooling system can be configured where additional cooling or short-term overload capability is required according to the transformer design.
The final cooling configuration should be selected according to the rated capacity, installation environment and actual load requirements.
Enclosure and Protection Options
For indoor transformer installations, protective enclosures can be selected according to project requirements.
Huamei's dry type transformer documentation includes enclosure configurations such as:
- IP20
- IP23
The enclosure material can be selected according to the transformer design and installation requirements.
The purpose of the enclosure is to provide additional protection for the transformer active parts while maintaining the ventilation required for dry type transformer cooling.
When selecting the enclosure, engineers should consider ventilation, installation environment, access requirements and required protection level.
Temperature Monitoring and Control
Temperature monitoring is an important part of dry type transformer operation.
Depending on the transformer configuration, a temperature control system can monitor winding temperature and provide alarm or protection functions.
For transformers equipped with forced-air cooling, the temperature controller can also be used to control cooling fan operation according to winding temperature.
This allows the cooling system to respond to changing transformer operating conditions.
Project-specific requirements for temperature indication, alarm signals and control interfaces should be confirmed before production.
Core and Winding Construction
The transformer core is an important component affecting magnetic performance, losses and operating noise.
Huamei dry type transformer designs use magnetic core structures selected according to the transformer series and required performance.
The core and winding assembly is designed to maintain mechanical stability during transportation and operation.
Depending on the product series, low-voltage windings may use foil structures, while high-voltage windings use insulated wire or cast winding arrangements.
The final winding and insulation structure depends on transformer capacity, voltage level, insulation requirements and product series.
Applications of Dry Type Transformers
Dry type transformers are widely used in projects where indoor installation and fire safety are important considerations.
Typical applications include:
- Industrial factories
- Commercial buildings
- Hospitals
- Data centers
- Airports
- Railway stations
- Metro systems
- High-rise buildings
- Shopping centers
- Industrial plants
- Indoor substations
- Infrastructure projects
- Mining facilities
- EPC electrical projects
The final transformer type should always be selected according to load characteristics, voltage level, installation conditions, environmental requirements and applicable project specifications.
Project Documentation and Engineering Support
For EPC contractors, engineering companies and industrial projects, transformer procurement normally requires technical confirmation before production.
According to project requirements, the technical documentation process may include:
- Transformer datasheet
- Outline drawing
- Nameplate information
- Electrical parameter confirmation
- Enclosure configuration
- Cooling method
- Temperature control requirements
- Accessory configuration
- Test documentation
- Packing information
- Project-specific drawings
If the customer already has a single-line diagram, technical specification or transformer datasheet, these documents can be reviewed before production to reduce the risk of parameter mismatch.
